The first name to appear on the file is that of Emma Smith who was assaulted by a gang in Aoril 1888 and, although she survived the initial atack, she later died from her injuries.

Although Emma was a Whitechapel murder victim she almost certainly wasn’t a victim of Jack the Ripper, so her story is not covered on this age, although a section of the site does tell the full story of the attack on Emma Smith.

Martha Tabram- The Possible First Victim

The next name is that of Matha Tabram who was murdered in the early hours of 7th August 1888. There is some debate over whether or not she was, in fact, the first victim of Jack the Ripper. Some say she was and some say she wasn’t.

The first of the canonical five, Mary Ann Nichols, also known as Polly, was discovered on August 31, 1888. She was lying on her back with her skirts pulled up; her throat was slashed deeply twice, all the way down to her vertebrae, and her low abdomen had been cut several times. Some of those belly wounds were so deep they literally ripped open her body cavity, exposing her intestines. When a physician examined her remains at the scene, at around 4:00 in the morning, he considered body temperature, as we would today. Since her body and legs were still somewhat warm compared to her cold hands, he concluded Nichols was probably dead for about a half hour.
